Freedom on the Sand: Greg’s X8 Story

Freedom on the Sand: Greg’s X8 Story

For many people, a day at the beach is simple: pack a bag, grab a towel, maybe a fishing rod, and head out to the sand and surf. For Greg Martin, however, those simple pleasures had always come with obstacles. As an amputee, navigating uneven terrain like sand presented a constant challenge, limiting how far he could go and how much he could enjoy his favourite pastime – fishing.

That changed when Greg trialled the Magic Mobility Extreme X8 through Astris PME Wollongong. Designed specifically to handle a variety of outdoor environments, the X8 has given Greg the confidence to access the beach and enjoy time outdoors again.

The journey to finding the right wheelchair was a deliberate and collaborative process, guided by Nathan Potter, Specialist Consultant at Astris PME Wollongong.

“We started by discussing Greg’s goals,” Nathan explains. “His therapist recommended trialling both the Magic Mobility Extreme X8 and the XT4. While Greg enjoyed the ride of the XT4, the X8 was the perfect fit – lightweight enough to transport in the back of his van, durable enough to tackle sand, and tailored to his individual needs.”

Trialling assistive technology is as much about confidence as it is about equipment. Nathan recalls the moment Greg first took the Extreme X8 onto the sand.

“He was understandably cautious at first, unsure how the chair would handle the terrain. But once he started moving, his face lit up. He was amazed by how smoothly he could navigate the beach.”

For Nathan, moments like these highlight the broader impact of assistive technology.

“It’s not just about mobility,” he says. “It’s about enhancing quality of life. For Greg, it’s being able to go fishing, enjoy the sand and surf, and spend time in a place that brings him peace.”

There are also important practical considerations when using wheelchairs in outdoor environments.

“Tyre pressure, understanding terrain, and knowing the chair’s limitations are all crucial,” Nathan notes. “We make sure clients feel confident and safe before they head out, while also ensuring they can truly enjoy the experience.”

For Greg, the Magic Mobility Extreme X8 has transformed what was once a frustrating journey into a moment of freedom. With the beach now accessible, he can focus on what he loves most – casting a line, feeling the ocean breeze, and spending time in a place that brings him peace.

Nathan sums it up simply: joy, freedom, and independence. For Greg, the Extreme X8 has made those words tangible, showing how the right assistive technology can help people reconnect with the places and activities they love.
